Best New songRide — Home Is A Feeling
Posted by LetsLoop on February 22, 2017, 8:31 pm At the start of this week @Ride hadn't released a new song in over 20 years... now they've just released their 2nd single in as many days!Home Is A Feeling will join Charm Assault on the shoeqaze pioneers' as-yet-unnamed 5th album, which will be released later this year on Wichita Recordings and follows up 1996's Tarantula.
Here's what guitarist @Mark Gardener had to say about the new single:
"Home Is A Feeling to me is like a slow, wide-screen, sonically, layered, slowed motion warm wash. Like returning home as dawn rises totally exhausted and spangled after a long..long...big, great night out"
And here's what frontman Andy Bell thinks of the track:
"Out of all the new songs ‘Home Is A Feeling’ comes closest to the early Ride sound. We felt comfortable going vintage on this tune because the album we are making has a pretty broad sonic scope. It’s a short and sweet, melodic tune, with stacked harmonies, reverbed-out guitars, slowed down drums, and a huge distorted bass sound. Erol put his sage-scented electronic wizards hat on to sample up some of our harmonies and make them into a synthesiser preset, which we ended up using on this and some of the other tunes too. We wanted this song to sound jet lagged, so everything on it was recorded with varispeed, either faster or slower than real time. It’s like 1966 @Beatles meets 1988 MBV… in other words, Ride."
@Erol Alkan, who produced the new album, also shared a few words:
"Nowhere and Going Blank Again were big records for me and my friends when we were growing up. I’ve vaguely known Andy for a few years through his brother-in-law but we didn’t actually meet until a couple of years back. I had an email from them asking if I’d like to collaborate with the band, and once I’d heard the demos, I was 100% in. And’s very well versed in electronic music, so we had a common bond in that as well as alternative music. The new music contains all the great elements you want from Ride—Great songs, loud guitars, beautiful harmonies, powerful rhythms."
If you're wondering what the band have been up to for the last 20 years... in 1996 Andy formed @Hurricane #1 and had a few pretty big hits like Step Into My World and Only The Strongest Will Survive before breaking up in 1999; he then went on to join @Oasis and later @Beady Eye. Mark Gardener and Laurence Colbert went on to form the short-lived band Animalhouse, before going their separate ways; Gardener went solo and released the album These Beautiful Ghosts, whilst Colbert played drums for @The Jesus and Mary Chain and @Supergrass. Steve Queralt retired from music altogether.
If you're new to Ride and want to hear what they were like back in the day, it's probably best to ignore their last 2 albums and focus on their first 2: start with Vapour Trail and Seagull from their debut Nowhere, Leave Them All Behind and Twisterella from their 2nd album Going Blank Again, and then if you like what you hear dive into the albums themselves.
