Posted by LetsLoop on June 27, 2017, 2:01 pm 2015 #MercuryPrize winner @Benjamin Clementine has announced his much-anticipated 2nd album, I Tell A Fly, and shared a new single called God Save The Jungle, which was inspired by the refugee camp in Calais. Here's what Benjamin had to say about the single and its inspiration:
"The news was bombarding us with images from Calais. I could hardly take it anymore. In the song I literally say, "Okay, well, if we men were men, then I suppose we have to look up to God and see if he can help us." I personally do not believe in God, but if we men have created God, then I suppose we can go up there and ask him again. Is that cynical? You know, just go up there again and ask him for help, because we do not want to help people who just want to escape.
Everyone has got their own misfortunes, which I also say in the song. Just because we live in England doesn't mean that we don't struggle. We still have to pay our rent, we still have to get up early in the morning, get things done. Because if we don't we will also literally be on the streets begging. So there's a balance, you know. We all live in the jungle, and if you spot somebody and you think maybe you can help them, just go ahead and help them."
I Tell A Fly will be out September 15th and will also feature the excellent lead single, Phantom of Aleppoville, which was inspired by a subject close to his heart: childhood bullying.
Here's what he had to say about the new album:
"I have written my second piece called I Tell A Fly. In little words - it’s a story about two wandering flies finding fleet. I am neither a politician nor prophet but an artist who creates to only entertain is no better than a con. I hope this album fulfils its purpose as the continuation from At Least For Now."
Benjamin has also announced a series of tour dates across the U.K. and Europe, so head on over to the Concerts tab on his profile page to grab yourself some tickets.
ICYMI, earlier this year Benjamin featured on the lead single to @Gorillaz's Humanz album: Hallelujah Money.
